Position Overview

With your analytical sharpness and orientation to detail, you ensure processes and procedures are in place to meet compliance with both internal policies and external regulations. Your wealth of compliance knowledge in the electric utility industry enables you to address compliance risks with expertly crafted strategies in a flash. These qualities make you the perfect fit for our Compliance Process Specialist position.


In this role, you’ll build and ensure ongoing compliance, including leading, developing, implementing, and initiating Mandatory Reliability Standards strategies, processes, and procedures. This will be in alignment with provincial and federal compliance legislation and legal requirements, while supporting Operations and ensuring safety, operability and system integrity isn’t compromised.

In year 1, you will:

  • Gain a full understanding of the Critical Infrastructure Protection and Operations and Planning standards and how they are applied to our business.
  • Establish trusting working relationships with your compliance colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Become familiar with and organize resources to meet workload demands and deadlines.

In year 2, you will:

  • Become knowledgeable in FortisBC’s standards, processes, and procedures, and conduct yourself as a subject matter expert in front of external auditors with a demonstrated understanding of audit processes and concepts.  
  • Identify improvements in existing processes and procedures 
  • Execute projects and ensuring adequate resourcing and tools for the team’s work.

What it takes:

  • A post-secondary degree with preference in engineering, computer science or information systems, plus five to seven years of electric utility experience in electric system operations and project management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  
  • Exceptional strategic-thinking skills to implement continuous improvement, flexibility, and adaptability with a focus on innovative customer solutions.
  • Great interpersonal skills to build working relationships through respect, open communication, and teamwork, with the ability to negotiate and influence as a part of customer relationship management.
  • Excellent organization skills to achieve results through planning, alignment, execution, and customer experience/responsiveness.
  • A demonstrated safety mindset to continuously prioritize safety active risk management in planning systems, tools and our everyday work as it evolves.
