Position Overview

In this position, you will provide legal support on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters related to the energy industry, which may include procurement, real property, and general corporate commercial agreements.

The details mean everything, and your collaborative, meticulous approach ensures you provide clear, practical and timely legal advice to assist with the direction of the business. Thanks to your finely tuned methods for organization, you can effectively work on projects simultaneously and provide timely support to your clients. You understand the need to engage closely with your clients and partners and provide practical advice to achieve the best results for the organization. 

In this role, you will:

  • Build a solid understanding of our business and strategic objectives and regulatory requirements to provide strategic legal support.
  • Apply your legal knowledge and experience to directly support business units, including present legal issues and make recommendations to senior management and our executive leadership team.
  • Foster strong working relations with business units and key stakeholders, promoting collaboration across legal and business functions.
  • Draft and negotiate agreements on a wide range of corporate commercial matters which, based on your prior experience,  may include procurement (standard templates, general terms and conditions, etc.), service agreements, joint use agreements, sponsorship agreements, or real property matters (including land use agreements, such as those related to Indigenous reserve lands).
  • Monitor emerging legal trends and requirements applicable to the organization to proactively assess impacts and manage risks.
  • Engage, instruct and oversee external legal counsel, as necessary.

What it takes:

  • A bachelor of law or Juris Doctor degree, at least eight years of post-call experience in an corporate legal department or law firm, and good standing membership with the Law Society of B.C.
  • Previous experience in procurement law (with knowledge of the procurement process and experience advising on a range of contracts with vendors and suppliers), real property law (including land tenure, purchase and sale agreements, and Indigenous lands matters), or general corporate commercial matters (including joint use agreements, service agreements, and sponsorship agreements).
  • A demonstrated analytical ability and attention to detail to identify, analyze, research, evaluate legal issues, interpret legislation and provide legal advice in a timely manner.
  • Proven communication skills, including the ability to effectively engage directly with business owners at all levels in the organization and manage expectations.
  • An extensive background in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts.
  • Effective organizational skills to independently manage multiple time-sensitive files and projects concurrently.
  • Experience in a regulated environment would also be an asset.

Additional Information

This position is based out of FortisBC’s Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby or Kelowna locations, with the option to work at another approved FortisBC office in British Columbia depending on the selected candidate’s level of experience.

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
