Position Overview
You’re a seasoned professional with over eight years of experience in cost estimating, known for your precision, analytical strength, and process leadership. With deep knowledge of AACE best practices, you’ll lead the development and implementation of estimating systems that support project deliverables and drive informed capital planning.
In this role, you’ll design scalable tools and manage data systems built on historical and industry benchmarks. You’ll collaborate across departments and with external partners to align estimating practices and ensure adoption of the tools and processes you develop. You’ll also lead continuous improvement initiatives and deliver training to elevate internal estimating capabilities across the organization.
In year 1, you will:
• Develop a deep familiarity with existing stakeholders, estimation tools, processes, and data by reviewing current estimating systems, historical data, and methodologies. Understand organizational workflows and stakeholder needs.
• Conduct a gap analysis, evaluating AACE best practices and guidelines and stakeholder needs against current estimating practices. Identify areas for improvement in accuracy, consistency, and scalability.
• Develop a roadmap for estimating system enhancements. Propose improvements to tools, databases, and processes, and prioritize initiatives based on impact, feasibility, and stakeholder input.
In year 2, you will:
• Implement enhancements to estimating tools and databases based on the Year 1 roadmap. Ensure integration with historical data, alignment with project workflows, and mechanisms for continuous improvement.
• Establish role as organizational subject matter expert in the application of cost estimating. Become the recognized internal authority on the strategic application of the estimating tools, methodologies, and best practices across all phases of a project Lifecyle.
• Provide expert guidance to project teams from early concept phase through execution, ensuring estimates are tailored, reliable, and aligned with the needs of the project and the current lifecycle stage. Act as a reference point for complex estimating challenges.
• Embed continuous improvement into the systems through establishing structured feedback mechanisms to gather information on the usability, accuracy, and effectiveness of the new tools and processes.
What it takes:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited University
• 8 years of project development, cost estimating, or project management experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) designation would be an asset.
• Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC.
Technical Expertise
• Deep understanding of cost estimating principles and AACE best practices.
• Experience developing and managing estimating databases and tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication skills with ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
• Proven ability to lead process improvement initiatives.
• Effective time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
