Position Overview

The Network Administrator is a senior technical role responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of FortisBC’s enterprise network infrastructure. This includes cloud and virtual networking, wired and wireless LAN/WAN environments, network hardware, routing and switching, firewalls, and network-based services. The Network Administrator contributes to network planning, participates in complex technical initiatives, and provides advanced operational support to ensure reliability, performance, and security of network systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides senior technical input to network planning for enterprise connectivity platforms, including:
    • Contributing to the development and maintenance of the Network Infrastructure Roadmap.
    • Researching and recommending future network architecture that aligns with business and technology needs, product capabilities, strategic direction, and industry best practices.
    • Performing network capacity planning and technology evaluations in collaboration with Enterprise Architecture, IS Applications, and business units.
  • Contributes technical expertise to the definition and delivery of network initiatives and upgrades, including:
    • Using the Network Infrastructure Roadmap to identify and prioritize network initiatives to support planning of appropriate projects.
    • Contributing to the definition of functional and technical requirements, scope, sequencing, and technical dependencies.
    • Contributing technical estimates and supporting documentation (e.g., effort/resource requirements, options, impacts, assumptions) to support project planning and funding considerations.
    • Leading the execution of network infrastructure projects, in coordination with external service providers and suppliers, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of network-related initiatives.
    • Developing and executing communication plans related to network upgrades, transitions, and site impacts.
    • Identifying conflicts between network project requirements and enterprise policies, standards, or architecture and recommending solutions.
    • Participating in technical change management activities, quality control reviews, testing, and production turnover activities.
  • Supports the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of enterprise network platforms and services, including:
    • Contributing to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of network platforms, including routing, cloud and virtual networking, switching, wireless, load-balancing and firewall technologies, in alignment with organizational standards and strategic direction.
    • Configuring and maintaining firewall rules, network segmentation, access controls, and secure connectivity between sites, data centres, and cloud environments.
    • Analyzing and processing complex network requests to confirm the specified technology is appropriate for client's needs and will operate within FortisBC’s network environment.
    • Assessing technical impacts, recommending alternatives where appropriate, and specifying technical work in detail for service delivery partners to implement.
  • Provides advanced technical support for enterprise network environments and network-based services, including:
    • Responding to support calls and network-related outages.
    • Troubleshooting advanced network issues across connectivity, routing, switching, wireless, firewall, performance, and configuration problems.
    • Performing and leading upgrades, installations, and preventive maintenance tasks for network hardware and software.

  • Documents work in the problem management system, prepare progress reports, administer and maintain network inventories.
  • Maintains up-to-date superior knowledge of the company’s network infrastructure and supported platforms.
  • Coordinates multiple resources and breaks down work, estimating and managing the activities required to deliver intermediate to large-scale network infrastructure projects successfully.
  • Provides senior-level support and collaboration with Technical Systems Analysts and other Admin roles.
  • Collaborating with Infrastructure and Systems Administrators to diagnose and resolve cross-domain incidents impacting infrastructure services.
  • Performs additional duties related to the above duties, including driving a vehicle, which do not affect the rating of the job.

Requirements

  • 2-year Diploma in Computer or Electronics Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 8 years’ related work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise networking includes routing, switching, wireless, load-balancing, and firewall technologies.
  • Advanced expertise with network monitoring and automation tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications and presentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Ability to execute large projects.
  • Ability to analyze problems.
  • Leadership and management skills.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s license.

This role supports the on premise and cloud networking portfolio, as well as the collaboration technologies.

  • Experienced supporting/troubleshooting voice protocols
