Position Overview

In this position, you will provide legal support on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, with a focus on real property matters including lease and license agreements, easements, permits, purchase and sale agreements, expropriations, and trespasses. You will provide legal guidance in the context of both sustainment capital projects and major projects. 

The details mean everything, and your collaborative, meticulous approach ensures you provide clear, practical and timely legal advice to assist with the direction of the business. Thanks to your finely tuned methods for organization, you can effectively work on projects simultaneously and provide timely support to your clients. You understand the need to work closely with your clients and partners to achieve the best results for the organization. 

In this role, you will:

  • Build a solid understanding of our business and strategic objectives and regulatory requirements to provide quality legal advice and support.
  • Apply your legal knowledge and experience to directly support business units, senior management and our executive leadership team.
  • Foster strong working relations with business units and key stakeholders, promoting collaboration across legal and business functions. 
  • Draft and negotiate agreements on a wide range of corporate commercial matters with a focus on real property matters including land use agreements (including those related to First Nation reserve land), purchase and sale agreements, and resolving trespass disputes.
  • Provide legal guidance in the context of both sustainment capital projects and major projects. 
  • Monitor emerging legal trends and requirements applicable to the organization, to proactively assess impacts and manage risks.
  • Engage, instruct, and oversee external legal counsel, as necessary. 

What it takes:

  • A Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor degree, three to six years of post-call experience in an corporate legal department or law firm, and good standing membership with the Law Society of B.C. 
  • Previous experience in real property matters including leasing, easements, lands dispositions and acquisitions, expropriations, and resolving trespass concerns. 
  • A demonstrated analytical ability and attention to detail to identify, analyze, research, evaluate legal issues, interpret legislation, and provide legal opinions and advice.
  • An extensive background in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating real property contracts. 
  • Thorough organizational skills to manage multiple time-sensitive files and projects concurrently.
  • Experience in a regulated environment would also be an asset.

What you need to know:

This position is based out of FortisBC’s Vancouver, Surrey, or Burnaby locations, with the option to work at another approved FortisBC office in British Columbia depending on the selected candidate’s level of experience. 

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
