Position Overview

In this position, you will provide legal support on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters related to the energy industry, including procurement law, and will advise our various internal departments.

 

The details mean everything, and your collaborative, meticulous approach ensures you provide clear, practical and timely legal advice to assist with the direction of the business. Thanks to your finely-tuned methods for organization, you can effectively work on projects simultaneously and provide timely support to your clients. You understand the need to work closely with your clients and partners to achieve the best results for the organization. 

In this role, you will:

  • Build a solid understanding of our business and strategic objectives and regulatory requirements to provide quality legal advice and support.
  • Apply your legal knowledge and experience to directly support business units, senior management and our executive leadership team.
  • Foster strong working relations with business units and key stakeholders, promoting collaboration across legal and business functions. 
  • Draft and negotiate agreements on a wide range of corporate commercial matters with a focus on procurement (standard templates, general terms and conditions, etc.), service agreements.
  • Provide legal advice in the context of customer service-related matters.
  • Monitor emerging legal trends and requirements applicable to the organization, to proactively assess impacts and manage risks.
  • Engage, instruct and oversee external legal counsel, as necessary. 

What it takes:

  • A Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor degree, three to six years of post-call experience in a corporate legal department or law firm, and good standing membership with the Law Society of B.C. 
  • Previous experience in procurement law, with knowledge of the procurement process and experience advising on a range of contracts with vendors and suppliers. 
  • A demonstrated analytical ability and attention to detail to identify, analyze, research, evaluate legal issues, interpret legislation and provide legal opinions and advice.
  • An extensive background in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts. 
  • Thorough organizational skills to manage multiple time-sensitive files and projects concurrently.
  • Experience in a regulated environment would also be an asset.

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
