Responsibilities
- Liaise with internal and/or external parties to provide technical system support, investigate and resolve system failures possibly related to Radio Frequency propagation problems, and create contingency plans for facility outages when required to ensure system reliability, including propagation problems, authentication or other network issues.
- Provide technical support for decision making by clearly communicating information regarding advanced metering technology and its operation to other team members.
- Provide advanced technical expertise related to systems programming, documentation, and troubleshooting within various systems of responsibility.
- Perform daily and periodic assessments of the operation telecommunication systems, and isolate, identify, and resolve issues within deadlines.
- Follow engineering standards related to system design, and documentation form queries on various database systems and analyze the data to assist other business units in obtaining required information from various systems.
- Assist in facilitating, design, coordinating of installation, and commissioning of communications devices including the planning and design process for telecommunications networks.
- Plan and co-ordinate firmware upgrades to telecommunications networks.
- Document and create standard operating procedures on common technical tasks.
- Estimate/manage/complete a series of tasks required for more complex projects.
- Provide advanced support to team members and various workgroups including acting as a subject matter expert for Operations Telecommunication work and projects. Provides technical advice and guidance to Technologist 2s.
- Contribute to assigned committees and projects, conducting a full range of complex technical and statistical functions. Duties may include:
- establishing user requirements;
- performing evaluation and acceptance tests;
- gathering and analysis of data;
- evaluating the risk of various alternatives;
- analyzing data, and researching discrepancies, and,
- providing recommendations and implementing solutions.
- May be subject to standby and callouts to support systems and operations.
- Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.
Requirements
- Education: A Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, or Telecommunication Engineering Technology, or Information Technology with a specialization in communication technologies. Certified or deemed eligible for certification at the Technologist level by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC).
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant and recent work experience with telecommunications systems and networks, including fiber media.
- Working knowledge of computer systems operations, environment and peripherals and various applications software in use in the department (SAP & suite of MS Office products).
- Comprehensive knowledge of IP networking and security fundamentals, Network Management Software, and/or SNMP.
- Strong understanding of electrical utility distribution systems including Stations, Metering, Radio Frequency propagation and RF Mesh fundamentals.
- Firm understanding in relation to systems of responsibility, such as SCADA, AMI and general telecom.
- Understanding of Mandatory Reliability Systems requirements relating to electric utilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to those without the background.
- Proficient with computer systems and related programs including Microsoft, Network Management Software, SNMP, and/or SCADA.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to perform, both as an individual contributor and as a member of a team.
- Strong organizational skills to handle numerous assignments and evaluate demands, while remaining flexible and adaptable to rapidly changing priorities.
- Sound analytical and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work as a subject matter expert and without direct supervision.
- Valid British Columbia driver’s license.
