Position Overview

You’re ready to take on the challenge of working on our AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Project where you will be part of a team building a more reliable natural gas system for our more than one million customers across British Columbia? The Gas AMI Project represents one of the largest Major Projects in FortisBC’s history as we upgrade all our gas meters to implement automated technologies that will improve the safety, resiliency, sustainability, and reliability of our natural gas system.

 

We are seeking a dynamic Project Engineer with a passion for technology and project management to join our AMI team. Reporting directly to the Project Director, AMI Technology, the Project Manager will provide crucial leadership and expertise in overseeing the implementation and development of our AMI network's non-Meter Sensors.
 

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration of the advanced metering solution with existing systems and infrastructure.
  • Manage allocated project resources and associated costs to achieve predetermined goals effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the AMI team, internal stakeholders, and external contractors.
  • Co-ordinate, and participate in the testing of advanced metering systems, including data validation, communication interfaces, and metering functionalities.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and maintenance of test environments and test data sets to support system testing activities.
  • Offer guidance and expertise in developing design and installation procedures for various remote sensors to be integrated into the AMI network.
  • Oversee technical definition, design, equipment installation, troubleshooting, and testing, ensuring alignment with project objectives and contractual terms.
  • Communicate project expectations to the team, maintain relationships with business units, vendors, and stakeholders, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Coordinate AMI Network sensor design and implementation among internal stakeholders, project personnel, and contractors.
  • Act as the central point of contact for AMI field implementation activities, maintaining work plans, project records, and resources.
  • Participate in field testing of advanced metering RF networks
  • Support the identification, documentation, and resolution of RF network issues, working closely with RF engineers and software developers.
  • Create and ensure compliance with regulations, codes, standards and guidelines. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that engineering documentation for the AMI system is completed.
  • Monitor progress, track activities, and provide status reports to key stakeholders and project personnel.
     

What it takes:

  • Directly related experience plus a Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering (registered or eligible for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia as a P. Eng). Equivalent experience will also be considered with any relevant internships or academic projects related to testing, quality assurance, or utility industry.
  • Related experience in a fully integrated gas utility.
  • Experience in overseeing technical field personnel.
  • General knowledge of AMI technologies, with a focus on gas AMI technology and its applications.
  • Proven ability in managing budgets, leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in project management tools like MS Project.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
     

What you need to know:

  • Applicants currently registered or eligible to register with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia as an Engineer in training will also be considered for the right candidate (salary range: $35.38 to $48.87 per hour).
  • Will require some travel within the FortisBC service territory.
  • Headquarter – Kelowna, BC

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
