In this role, you will:

Your qualities and skills make you a great candidate as our Planning and Design Technologist.

In this role, you’ll put your analytic and organizational skills to work by designing and coordinating distribution-related projects including customer-driven work and system-driven upgrades supporting both growth and reliability.

In year 1, you will:

  • Understand how the regulated electric business model works, including an understanding of the FortisBC Tariff, FortisBC estimating models and key standards, while building/maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understand how to track, manage, and process most work types within the various business systems (i.e., Open Item DataBase (OID), estimating tools, calculation tools and drafting standards etc.). Start providing Planning and Design support in response to a variety of external and internal requests.  
  • Spend time with other internal designers, conducting on-site customer meetings (who are seeking new, upgraded or alteration of servicing) and attending construction crew field visits to gain a better understanding of repairs and/or upgrades being completed in the field. 

In year 2, you will:

  • Understand how to plan and design complex projects such as subdivisions, large commercial services and system improvements.
  • Provide coordination of larger projects including definition of scope, overall project and customer pricing, as well as supporting successful completion of the job.
  • Act as a contact for premium rated builder/developers and key internal and external customers.  

What it takes:

  • A post-secondary Engineering Technology Diploma in an appropriate discipline (electrical, mechanical and civil.)
  • A certified or deemed eligible for certification at the technologist level by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC).
  • Four years of relevant work experience with at least two (2) of those years directly related to Electric Utility Planning and Design.
  • Valid British Columbia Driver's license.

Additional Information

  • This position has restricted holiday availability based on operational requirements for certain months of the year, as per Article 14 of the MoveUp/FortisBC Collective Agreement.
  • This position may involve working shift work or late coverage depending on customer and operational requirements. There is potential for day, afternoon and night shifts, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
