Position Overview
You excel at building and maintaining the company’s public image, providing strategic advice and oversight for proactive media and stakeholder engagement and issues management approaches. This includes media strategies and identifying and monitoring issues that may impact corporate initiatives.
As a senior corporate communications advisor you’ll develop and implement strategic communication plans, establish and maintain media relationships, identify public issues, create stakeholder messaging, and act as a corporate spokesperson. You enjoy researching, writing, editing and overseeing the production of various communication materials, which may include executive presentations, corporate announcements, corporate profiles, annual reports, and news releases. You understand how to identify key audiences and leverage available channels to reach them.
In this role, you will:
- Develop a thorough understanding of FortisBC’s key initiatives and priorities and how they fit into the company’s vision.
- Identify opportunities to tell our success stories through various channels (video, digital, social media, print, etc.).
- Provide strategic communication and issues management advice as it relates to projects, developing and implementing plans and tactics where required.
- Translate complex concepts and materials into clear, concise and accurate material for a variety of audiences and channels.
- With a keen eye for detail, develop a variety of communications products, including news releases, media pitches, speeches, blog posts and other public-facing materials.
- Support the implementation of government, community, stakeholder, and regulatory engagement activities and initiatives.
- Identify, track and manage emerging issues related to key initiatives, from communities, governments, media, and regulators.
- Participate on and/or lead cross-functional teams and committees as required.
What it takes:
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, public relations, journalism or a directly related discipline and seven (7) years relevant work experience. A background in either politics, government or media would be considered an asset.
- An interest in working closely with a team of dedicated communications professionals under what can be challenging and demanding circumstances at a large, complex organization with many internal stakeholders.
- A solid understanding of municipal, provincial and federal politics, and of public sentiment, using this knowledge to provide strategic guidance.
- Proactive and excellent problem-solving skills.
- The confidence to work with senior leaders and different parts of the business in support of corporate objectives.
- Ability to be, on a rotational basis, part of the 24/7 on-call departmental emergency response team, to respond to media enquiries in the interest of public.
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities, while building strategy in advance, work in a high pressure and fast-paced environment and deliver high quality product under tight timelines.
In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
Our engaging workplace offers a wide range of challenging opportunities, while being safe, inclusive and diverse. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, while supporting life-long career development. We also encourage volunteerism and nourish the need to give back to your community.
